植物器官发生退化对于其最终的数目和大小具有重要意义。在营养充足，生长条件良好的情况下，一个六倍体小麦的小穗能够产生9－12个小花原基，最后只有0－4个小花原基能够结种子，60%以上的小花原基在小麦穗发育的过程中退化，60%以上的穗粒数潜力损失了。大麦与小麦穗子结构的相似之处是双方的穗子都包含多个小穗，每一个小穗都由小花组成；大麦与小麦穗子结构的区别是小麦的每一个小穗包含多个小花，大麦的每一个小穗只有一个小花。在营养充足，生长条件良好的情况下，大麦单个穗子上30%左右的小穗会发生退化。因此小麦大麦穗器官发生退化的机理研究对于穗粒数和产量的提高具有重要意义。课题组的主要研究方向为：
1.小麦小花和大麦小穗可育性相关QTL的鉴定，候选基因的功能验证及调控网络的解析；
2.驯化过程对麦类作物穗发育的影响；
3.环境因素对植物器官发生退化的影响。
