The Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Physiology (formerly named Key Laboratory of Photosynthesis & Environmental Molecular Physiology), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in December 2005. The major focus of the Laboratory is to elucidate the molecular machinery behind plant development and stress responses using genetic, physiological, proteomics and metabolomics tools. We aim to understand how cell differentiation, orgenogenesis, and biotic and abiotic responses are regulated in plants, and to use such knowledge to improve the yield and quality of crops. The Key laboratory at the moment has 18 research groups, supervised by a board of 15 external members and 8 internal members. Prof. Tingyun Kuang (Academician) is the present director, and Prof. Chun-Ming Liu serves as the director.
The Key Laboratory hosts three technology platforms for proteomics, cell biology and metabolomics research, with 5 mass spectrometries, 1 electron microscopes and 3 confocal microscopes. These facilities open to regional life science institutions in the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Within the laboratory, we have 20 professors, including 5 Distinguished Young Scholars of recognized by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC) and 12 Hundred-Talent Plan Scholar nominated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Among these research groups, many international collaboration projects are going on. In particular, 6 groups form a research team dedicated to plant organogenesis, supported by NNSFC, and 5 groups are involved in a CAS International Partnership Program. We currently have 23 ongoing projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), 75 projects from the NNSFC, 41 projects from the CAS, and 26 transgenic research special projects from the MOST, with a total funding of 190 million RMB. In last five years, 235 SCI indexed papers have been published, including 69 papers with the impact factor above 5, which count about 60% of the total publications in this category in the Institute. In addition, a series of applied research achievements with filed patents have been obtained.
